The Three Trimesters of Pregnancy
The three trimesters of pregnancy mark specific developments of the fetus. 40 weeks is considered to be the full term for pregnancy. Pregnancy is considered premature if the baby is born before the end of 37th week. Following are the three trimesters of pregnancy:
The first trimester
0 to 13 weeks are considered to be the first trimester of pregnancy. It is the most vital period of baby’s development. It is the time when pregnant woman seek more care as most miscarriages and birth defects occur during the first trimester. The baby’s body structure and organ system develop during the first trimester. The mother-to-be will experience a lot of bodily changes during this period. This may even cause symptoms like frequent urination, fatigue, nausea and tenderness in the breasts. These are very common in most of the pregnant women. However, there can also be other symptoms such as tiredness, increased energy level and emotional fluctuations etc.
The second trimester
The next 14 to 26 weeks are considered to be the second trimester of pregnancy. As most of the unpleasant effects of early pregnancy disappears during this time, it is considered as “the golden period”. Most of the symptoms that the pregnant woman had earlier will disappear slowly and new ones will appear. There can be abdominal pain, back pain, constipation, heartburn and leg cramps. The mother-to-be will be able to feel the baby’s first fluttering movements between 16 to 20 weeks.
The third trimester
The final stretch of pregnancy is called the third trimester, which is during the 27th to 40th weeks. This is the time when the pregnant woman gets more anxious and curious about her baby. Certain physical symptoms such as hemorrhoids, varicose veins, shortness of breath and sleeping problems can be there during the final trimester of pregnancy. Increase in the size of uterus is one of the main issue that causes most of the symptoms. As the fetus develops big after 32 weeks, it may make only fewer moves. Delivery may take place between the 37th and 42nd week.
