Fibroids

Abnormal growth that develop in a woman’s uterus is termed as fibroids. Very large sized fibroids can cause issues like heavy periods and severe abdominal pain. Certain cases may not show signs or symptoms at all. These growth are usually considered non-cancerous or benign. The exact cause is not yet specified. Based on the locations, fibroids classification are: 

  • Intramural

  • Subserosal

  • Submucosal

  • Pedunculated

Even though, the exact cause is not clear, experts believe certain factors influence fibroid formation. Some of them are:

  • Hormones

  • Family history

  • Pregnancy

Symptoms of fibroids

It may vary according to the size and location of the tumor. Some of the common symptoms are :

  • Pain in the lower back or pelvis

  • Heavy bleeding during periods

  • Unusual lengthy periods

  • Increased urination

  • Pain while sexual intercourse

  • Enlargement of the abdomen

Ultrasound and pelvic MRI are the common diagnostic methods to diagnose fibroids. Fibroids can be treated with medications or with the help of surgeries. To shrink the fibroids, the doctor may prescribe certain medication which will regulate the hormone levels. Pain relievers and intrauterine device are also prescribed in certain cases.

In severe cases, the doctor may suggest surgery. Very large sized fibroids are removed through the surgery called myomectomy. Worst cases may even seek hysterectomy, which will remove the uterus. The patient will not be able to get pregnant after hysterectomy.
